To address the risk of head injuries, technological advancements in helmet design have introduced Mips®, a groundbreaking system that enhances protection during certain impacts. Mips®, an abbreviation for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, is built into helmets to help reduce rotational motion to the head that could occur in oblique impacts.

The Mips® system is specifically designed to provide added safety for helmets by reducing harmful forces that may be transferred to the head during certain impacts. It targets rotational motion, which is a common cause of concussions and more severe brain injuries resulting from oblique hits to the head. The Mips® system consists of a low friction layer mounted inside the helmet. In the event of a crash, this layer is designed to move slightly, redirecting forces away from the head to help reduce the risk of brain injury.

A critical feature of the Mips® system is its ability to provide omnidirectional coverage of the entire surface between the head and helmet. It allows for a relative movement of 10-15mm, effectively redirecting energy away from the head during oblique impacts. Furthermore, Mips®-equipped helmets are certified to meet European and US helmet safety standards, ensuring they comply with the highest safety regulations for the region in which they are sold.
